Brevemente será criada a Associação Mundial de Business Angels, cujo arranque se deu no Estoril durante o Business Angels Leaders Forum realizado em Outubro e cuja organização esteve à responsabilidade da FNABA, da EBAN e da ACA. A propósito desse assunto, tive a oportunidade de responder a algumas questões que me foram colocadas e as quais partilho com todos:

Soon, a new World Business Angels Association will be created, as a result of the Estoril event - Business Angels Leaders Forum, that took place last October under the organization of FNABA, EBAN and ACA. Regarding that subject, I had recently the opportunity to answer some questions that I'm sharing here with everyone:


O que o levou a envolver-se na criação desta associação internacional de Business Angels?
Acredito que qualquer um de nós que se envolveu nesta iniciativa fê-lo convicto de que a sua ligação à causa dos BA poderia ser mais profícua através dos resultados que poderíamos alcançar juntos do que com os ganhos que poderemos vir a repartir. Ou seja envolvermo-nos com um grupo de pessoas ligadas pela dedicação a uma causa comum, não amedrontadas pela falta de recursos, faz de nós uma Comunidade na qual os valores da iniciativa, criatividade e paixão sao atributos que cada um de nós decide, diariamente, momento a momento, atribuir gratuitamente a partir de um genuíno sentido de missão.


What drove you to get involved in the creation of this new international association for business angels?
I believe that any of us which has involved him/herself in this initiative made it convinced that his/hers connection to the BA cause could be more useful through the results which we could reach together than through the gains we can share in the future. I.e. to be involved with a group of people tied by the dedication to a common cause, not frightened by the lack of resources, making us a community in which the values of initiative, creativity and passion are qualities that each one of us decides, daily, moment by moment, to give freely for a genuine sense of mission.



Quais são os principais desafios que se colocam na criação desta nova comunidade de business angels?
Como Comunidade que somos ou pretendemos vir a construir, importa salientar que a eficácia do seu funcionamento depende da capacidade de mobilização de esforços e na inspiração de cada um de nós a ir um pouco mais além. Efectivamente, a mobilização das capacidades humanas assume o seu expoente máximo no seio das Comunidades uma vez que estas permitem que:
- exista uma permuta de conhecimentos voluntária em que cada um dos membros dá o seu contributo em troca de uma hipótese de fazer a diferença ou de desenvolver o seu talento;
- em cada um dos membros esteja um partidário da causa;
- a dedicação e o compromisso estejam baseados na partilha dos objectivos e fins do Grupo;
- a supervisão e o controlo estejam dependentes de normas, valores e dos incitamentos de cada um dos membros da Comunidade;
- as capacidades e as vontades sejam mais importantes do que as habilitações e as definições das funções na determinação de quem faz o quê;
- as recompensas obtidas sejam de cariz emocional e nao económicas.

Estas vantagens permitem-me afirmar que um dos grandes desafios que a nossa futura Associacao tem pela frente é o conseguir que seja o espírito comunitário e nao o peso da máquina burocrática, assente em estruturas hierárquicas por mais meritórias que as mesmas possam ser, a unir e a motivar os seus Membros na concretização dos seus ideiais.


What are the main chalanges for this new business angels comunity?
Well, as a community that we are or want to build, it is important to evidence that the efficacy of its operation depends of the capacity of mobilizing efforts and of the inspiration of each one of us to go a bit beyond. Effectively, the mobilization of the human capacities assumes its maximum exponent in the heart of the communities once they allow:
- to exist a voluntary exchange of knowledge in which each of the members gives his/hers contribution in exchange to a chance to make the difference or develop his/hers talent;
- that in each one of the members there is an adherent to this cause;
- the dedication and commitment are based in the share of the objectives and aims of the group;
- the supervision and control are dependent of norms, values and incitements of each one of the members of the community;
- the capacities and wills are more important than the qualifications and the definitions of the functions in determining who makes what;
- the rewards are of emotional aspect and not economic.

All this advantages allow us to state that one of the great challenges which our association has, and to get that it is a community spirit and not the weight of the red tape machine, based in hierarchy structures even if they are meritorious, is to connect and motivate its members in making their ideals come true.



Que modelo de organização defende para a nova associação a ser criada?
Sou apologista de uma Associação assente numa "estrutura interligada" em vez de uma hierarquia de níveis, uma vez que aquela permite relacionar cada membro da Associação a todos os outros e em que as linhas de comunicacao sao directas, isto é, membro a membro e equipa a equipa. Teremos assim uma rede densa de ligações interpessoais onde a informação pode fluir em todas as direcções sem ser filtrada por estruturas intermédias.

Para o efeito a adopcao de uma estrutura similar a arquitectura social da Web - aberta, horizontal, maleável, não hierarquizada- poderá ser um bom modelo para a arquitectura de gestão da nossa Associação. Recordo a propósito que o sucesso do movimento do software de código aberto - de que o Linux é um dos expoentes- e o exemplo mais flagrante de como um modelo de participação voluntária pode mobilizar o esforço dos membros de uma comunidade em grande escala. Com efeito, perceber como engenheiros informaticos, de uma maneira geral super-ocupados, estão dispostos a contribuir com o seu tempo em projectos de software de codigo aberto pode ajudar-nos a perceber algumas das componentes necessárias para o sucesso de um sistema de participação voluntária em que terá de assentar a nossa Associação.


Which organizational model would you prefer for this organization?
I am in favour of an association based in an "interconnected structure" instead of a level hierarchy once it allows to relate each member of the association to all the others and in which the communication lines are direct, this and member by member and team by team. Thus, we will have a compact network of interpersonal connections where the information can flow in all the directions without being filtered by intermediary structures.
To that effect the adoption of a similar structure the social architecture of the web – open, horizontal, flexible, non-hierarchy – can be a good model to the architecture of the management of our association. Talking about this, I remind the success of the movement of the software in open source – in which Linux is one of the exponents – and the more notorious example of how a voluntary participation model can mobilize the effort of the members in a big scale of a community. Actually, to understand how computing engineers, generally very busy, are willing to contribute with their time in projects of open source software can help us to understand some of the necessary components to the success of a system of voluntary participation in which our association will have to be based upon.




Quais as vantages que poderão surgir para a sociedade?
Acredito que através de pequenas iniciativas empresariais podemos contribuir para a resolução de alguns problemas sociais, nomeadamente a questão do desemprego e das perspectivas de futuro dos jovens de todo o mundo. Acredito imenso que a existência de um comunidade de BA a nível mundial podera ajudar a criar um ecossistema mais favorável para os jovens empreendedores que dessa forma poderão ajudar a democratizar a criação de valor através de modelos de inovação em colaboração e livres.


Which advantages can we expect for society?
I believe that through small business initiatives we can contribute to the solution of some social issues namely the question of unemployment and the perspectives to the future of the youth all over the world. I believe a lot in the existence of a BA community at world level to help in the creation of a friendlier ecosystem to young entrepreneurs that, this way, can help to democratize the creation of value through innovation models in collaboration and free.
